Nestled in the vibrant Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago, Backlot Coffee is much more than your average coffee shop—it’s a welcoming haven where creativity, community, and exceptional coffee intersect. Located conveniently at 3982 N Avondale Ave, just a short stroll from the Irving Park Blue Line stop and the nearby Metra Railway station, Backlot Coffee offers a charming retreat for locals and visitors alike.
Stepping inside, you immediately sense the warm, inviting atmosphere that sets Backlot apart. The space is thoughtfully adorned with modern art and rotating exhibitions—currently showcasing the talented Sarah E.—adding a dynamic cultural flair that perfectly complements the café’s eclectic, somewhat hippie-chic vibe. It’s a place that feels as much like a community gallery as a neighborhood coffee spot, attracting a stylish, young urban crowd eager to savor both art and exceptional brews.
Backlot's real star is, of course, its meticulously crafted coffee menu, featuring an impressive variety of hot, cold, and specialty beverages that cater to every palate. Whether you're craving a rich, velvety latte or something with a bit more edge, like the Honey Cinnamon Cortado or the raw sugar Matcha Latte with a shot of espresso, the team at Backlot takes pride in delivering a memorable coffee experience with every cup. The Chai, Mocha, and the unique Cardamom Rose Latte with almond milk showcase the café’s flair for blending traditional flavors with unexpected, exotic notes.
What truly elevates Backlot Coffee is the sensory delight that each drink promises. Imagine the smooth creaminess of a perfectly poured Breve Latte, the bold yet balanced intensity of a Long Black, or the refreshing crispness of an Espresso Tonic—each sip invites you to slow down and savor the moment. On warmer days, the Iced Vanilla Coffee and Iced Matcha Latte provide a refreshing pick-me-up, while the Oat Milk Hot Chocolate offers comforting warmth during Chicago’s chillier months.
The menu extends beyond beverages, with a delicious selection of baked goods that complement the coffee spectacularly. The quiches—especially the Spinach & Feta and the caramelized onion variety—are savory treasures that reviewers rave about, perfect for a light yet satisfying meal. Sweet treats like the Pistachio Lemon Donut paired with a caramel latte or the banana nut bread, which numerous customers praise, offer just the right balance of indulgence. Whether you're in the mood for a flaky Ham and Cheese Croissant or the vegan olive oil orange donut, the pastry offerings are as thoughtful and rich in flavor as the coffee itself.
Customers consistently emphasize the friendly and enthusiastic staff who not only prepare each order with care but also foster a welcoming environment that encourages both socializing and solo work sessions. Lou Lou’s experience highlights the immediate attentiveness, while Stephanie Polakowski appreciates the warm greetings and vibrant community feel, even during busy weekend mornings. Many find Backlot a perfect stop before local events like the Skokie Festival of Cultures, making it both a neighborhood gem and a destination worth the detour.
The intimate size of Backlot Coffee adds to the charm without feeling cramped—plenty of seating allows you to settle in with your laptop, a book, or good company. This balance of cozy and lively makes Backlot a uniquely versatile space. As Sweet Sinay so aptly puts it, the blend of art, coffee, and community creates a place that could easily belong on a college campus, full of youthful energy and endless inspiration.
In a city bustling with countless coffee shops, Backlot Coffee stands out by offering more than just great coffee—it delivers a holistic experience where taste meets culture, warmth meets style, and every visitor leaves a little more connected to the vibrant pulse of Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood.

I wanted to try something new on my way to the Skokie Festival of Cultures and glad I stopped at Backlot Coffee! It’s a small space that packs a lot of character! They had art for sale on the walls and plenty of space to sit to enjoy your coffee or work on your laptop. I got a hot coffee with caramel and it was handed to me immediately and it was just what I wanted! The banana bread has chocolate chips and really hit the spot! Fair prices and kind staff. They have parking too!
Great local coffee spot right off Irving Park blue line stop in the Old Irving Park neighborhood. They have a huge selection of delicious pastries and goodies (banana bread is awesome!) and excellent coffee everyone working here is really friendly and welcoming. The place gets really busy in the morning on weekends but there’s lots of spots to sit. I also loved the artwork on display by Sarah E. Wain! So I posted it in the photos. Definitely my new coffee spot in the neighborhood.
Really friendly staff, enthusiastic and informative. I tried the spinach and caramelized onion quiche which is excellent in their microwave for 45 seconds and the vegan, olive oil orange donut both brilliant!
If you're tired of your basic coffee routine, Backlot Coffee is a delightful change of pace. This cozy little neighborhood spot offers robust, flavorful coffee that stands out from the mainstream options. Their menu also features a variety of delicious pastries and bakery items (some of my favorites being their banana nut bread and the spinach feta croissant) making it a perfect spot to satisfy all of your morning cravings at a generally quick and always friendly pace.
The coffee shop, just off to the side of the Metra Railway station (hence backlot?) is a very chic and somewhat hippie-vibed coffee shop that would be very at home on a college campus. The shop is adorned with modern art and creative wall paintings. The clientele meshes nicely with the vibe (except me, perhaps). Young, urban, stylish customers fill out the experience. The staff is friendly and the restrooms are clean and cutely decorated in the same style as the rest of the shop. Pro Tip The music, staff and customers can be pretty loud. Enjoying the vibe is great. Doing work here may not be so much so.
I recently visited Chicago for the first time and Backlot Coffee was the first coffee shop I went to. I was immediately impressed by the bright and airy atmosphere, and the friendly and welcoming staff. I ordered a cardamom rose oatmilk latte, which is now my new favorite coffee flavor. My mom ordered the oatmeal cookie latte, which she loved. We also shared a blueberry donut, which was the perfect way to end our breakfast. The donut was fresh and soft, with a generous amount of blueberry throughout. I later learned that the donuts are made by a local bakery, which is always a plus. I loved the artwork on the walls, which is for sale and created by a local artist. It was a nice touch that added to the overall charm of the coffee shop. I will definitely be returning to Backlot Coffee every time I visit Chicago.
Compact coffee shop with a large selection of pastries, in house roasting, and some hot breakfast options. Staff were very friendly, and there was a nice amount of art for sale and on display. Specialty drinks had some very unique options and the drip was pretty good. Did not try any hot food options but the pastries were good. If you do get hot food, it is in a cooler directly opposite the register and can be reheated in a microwave. Solid spot, especially if you're taking the metra or blue line. There's also ample parking!
Consistently delicious espresso, decaf and caffeinated. Everyone is kind and super efficient even when there's a line. My favorite spot for a quick coffee. Easy to pop into while heading onto the freeway, always parking out front or in back.
